Gov. Snyder abandons GOP to support voting rights

In a dramatic departure from the Republican Party line, Gov. Rick Snyder vetoed proposed election laws that would have required many voters to show photo IDs to cast a ballot.

Snyder blasted the bill, which was championed by fellow Republicans, saying it would cause confusion and discourage voting.

Synder’s decision to abandon his base to protect voter rights comes a day after the U.S. Justice Department rejected a South Carolina law that also would have required photo IDs to vote.

Snyder, who has painted an image of himself as a moderate and independent, also vetoed a bill that would require mandatory training for anyone involved in voter registration drives.

Civil rights leaders applauded the vetoes, saying the laws would have prevented or discouraged many minorities and other disenfranchised groups from casting a ballot.
