Fire severely damaged an indelible symbol of Detroit’s regeneration and creative underbelly this morning.
The Imagination Station – two colorfully renovated historic houses facing the iconic ruins of Michigan Central Station – sustained serious fire damage.

No injuries were reported.
One of the houses was virtually gutted, its front exterior now a charred shell. The adjacent house also was damaged, with a blackened hole in the roof, above the painted words, “If we fight together, our city will rise.”
The Imagination Station wasn’t just two formerly abandoned houses in Roosevelt Park. It was a nonprofit effort to create a community campus for housing, public art, green space and music and social events.
Let’s hope the fire doesn’t smolder that dream.
