From movie house to heavy metal haven, Harpos wants to close the curtain

Harpos Concert Theatre, a 1930s movie house now known for hosting heavy metal shows on Detroit’s east side, is for sale with a reduced price tag of $649,000.

The art deco-style theater on Harper Avenue, listed on Century 21, has struggled with break-ins and assaults as the area surrounding it continues to crumble under abandonment and poverty.

Until recently, the 29,000-square-foot theater was listed for $699,000.

Harpos has a colorful history. Originally a movie house that opened in 1939 with an 80-foot vertical sign, the building was converted into a nightclub in the 1970s before finding a strong following among heavy metal and industrial rock fans.

Gritty with sticky floors and cheap beers, Harpos has earned a reputation for attracting major talent, including Iron Maiden, U2, Cheap Trick, Anthrax, White Zombie, The Misfits, Danzig, Blue Oyster Cult, Dead Kennedy’s, Slayer, Megadeth, INXS and Gwar.

The theater seats more than 2,000 and includes a spacious lobby, large stage, two offices and an upstairs apartment.
