Just two blocks from a Detroit police precinct, an after-hours club was selling sex, booze and drugs until the wee hours of the morning, according to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff’s deputies raided the windowless, nondescript club at 29 E. Baltimore near Woodward and Grand Boulevard in the New Center area and confiscated guns, $10,0000 in cash and about 50 cars.
The search uncovered drugs and prostitutes, who were having sex with patrons on the second floor, the sheriff’s office said. A 16-year-old girl was found in the building.
More than 130 people were ticketed; the club’s 10 operators were arrested.
“I can’t believe it took so long” to make arrests, said Eddie Rice, who lives in an apartment nearby. “It was obvious what they were doing. How do you not notice loads of people walking into a building right off of Woodward in the middle of the night? It wasn’t exactly quiet.”
Rice said he and neighbors called Detroit police, but to no avail.
Chief Ralph Godbee acknowledged last week that his department is having trouble responding to calls because of recent cuts.
We are awaiting a response from the police department.
The sheriff’s office wouldn’t say whether deputies became involved because the Detroit Police Department wouldn’t.
“This kind of blatant lawlessness will not be tolerated,”
said of the club in a press release. “Criminal activity of this kind not only leads to other crimes but it detracts from an area that is trying to rebound.”
