New MLive.com columnist calls for “armed rebellion” after Supreme Court ruling

By Steve Neavling

MLive.com should be kicking itself for hiring conservative agitator Matthew Davis as its new political columnist.

As the Michigan news site was welcoming Davis to his new job, the former Free Press reporter and mouthpiece for conservative causes created a firestorm. So irate by this week’s Michigan Supreme Court decision on health care reform, Davis suggested it be met with an armed rebellion in a piece for the political blog, Michigan View.

“If government can mandate that I pay for something I don’t want, then what is beyond its power? If the Supreme Court’s decision Thursday paves the way for unprecedented intrusion into personal decisions, then has the Republic all but ceased to exist? If so, then is armed rebellion today justified?

He added: “God willing, this oppression will be lifted and America free again before the first shot is fired.”

Really? An armed revolt? Over ensuring that all Americans have health care coverage?

If MLive.com wants to spread the flames of intolerance and increase web traffic, it made a brilliant choice. Davis will be sure to incite, sensationalize and polarize.

In a column on MLive.com, Meegan Holland suggests that Davis will cool down the rhetoric.

“We want a thought-provoking political columnist. We don’t want to throw gasoline on the fire that is sure to simmer as the November election draws near. Matt knows that and plans to fill that bill for us.”

Only time will tell.
