Former Detroit Tigers’ pitcher charged with sexual assault at casino hotel

Detroit Tigers pitcher Evan Reed was charged Wednesday with sexual assault after prosecutors say he assaulted a woman in a hotel room at the Motor City Casino and then demanded she leave.

The 45-year-old Oakland County woman said she was drinking with a friend at a downtown Royal Oak bar on March 29 when she met Reed, 28, who is now pitching with the Tigers minor league team, Toledo Mud Hens. The pair danced and sat together at a table to talk, according to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s office.

“At some point the complainant finished an alcohol drink and began to feel odd,” said Maria Miller, spokeswoman for the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office.

Reed faces up to 15 years in prison on charges of criminal sexual conduct in the third degree.

“He is also charged under the theory that he committed an act of penetration when he had reason to know the victim was physically helpless or mentally incapacitated or mentally incapable to consent,” Miller said.
