An Eastpointe man viciously attacked a Home Depot employee with a contaminated syringe until a customer with a gun ended the violent confrontation in Roseville.

Joshua Joseph Silva, 26, was charged with assault with intent to do great bodily harm and retail fraud in 39th District Court on Tuesday. He is jailed on a $25,000 bond.

Police said Silva, a heroin addict, tried to steal a $180 battery-powered drill Monday afternoon when security tried to prevent him from leaving the store near 14 Mile and Little Mack . Silva responded by throwing punches and then grabbing a used syringe from his pocket and repeatedly stabbing one of the employees with it.

A customer with a permit to carry a concealed weapon ordered Silva to stop the assault. Silva obeyed orders but ran before police arrived.

He was captured nearby.

Police said the needle appeared to be used.

Silva will be tested for infectious diseases once a judge grants a search warrant for his blood.
