Ex-Treasurer Andy Dillon on Caribbean cruise on last week of work

Disgraced former Treasurer Andy Dillon is on a luxury cruise in the Caribbean on what was supposed to be his last week of tax-paid consulting work for Gov. Rick Snyder, the Motor City Muckraker has found.

Dillon, who resigned on Halloween after we revealed alcohol problems and racially charged text messages sent from his cell phone, continued to draw his full $175,000 state salary as an advisor to his successor.

But it appears the governor’s office wasn’t aware that Dillon was on a Royal Caribbean cruise during his last full-week of work.

“Mr. Dillon’s temporary assignment to assist Treasurer Clinton in the transition will be wrapped up this Friday, Jan. 31,” Snyder spokeswoman Sara Wurfel told me Wednesday evening in an email.

Trouble is, I responded, he has been on vacation since at least last Friday.

Wurfel said she couldn’t “speak to this” and suggested I speak with the Treasurer’s Department, which responded in a statement today that Dillon finished his work early.

“Dillon is on un-paid vacation,” treasury spokesman Terry Stanton told me. “His temporary assignment concludes tomorrow.”

Vacation on his last week?

“His work was wrapped up,” Stanton responded.

Dillon oversaw the appointment of emergency managers in numerous Michigan cities and schools but was also distracted by excessive drinking and a messy divorce, as we reported last year.

In August, we revealed that Dillon sent his ex-wife racially charged texts aimed at a black friend. He also was accused of domestic violence but charges were never filed because of a lack of evidence.

Dillon couldn’t be reached for comment.

In 2004, Dillon was first elected to the state House. After winning re-election in 2006, his Democratic colleagues appointed hims to be the speaker of the House. Dillon even survived a recall election for his role in raising taxes and was re-elected in 2008.
