A white man threatened to set fire to a University of Michigan student’s hijab on Friday evening if she didn’t remove it, Ann Arbor police said.

The Muslim student told police she didn’t know the man, who demanded she remove the hijab or he would “set her on fire with a lighter,” according to a crime alert issued by the University of Michigan.

The student removed the hijab. She was on the 600 block of East William near S. State St.

The suspect is described as 20 to 30 years old, “average height, athletic build, bad body odor, unkempt appearance, intoxicated with slurred speech.”

It’s just the latest incident of intimidation directed at Muslims after Donald Trump won Tuesday’s election. Earlier this week, three white students threatened to hang a Wayne State University student by her hijab, according to witnesses.

Also this week, white students at Royal Oak Middle School chanted “Build the wall” to taunt their Latino classmates. At DeWitt Junior High School, students locked arms Wednesday to create a “wall” as they shouted racially charged slurs at minority classmates.

A Shelby Township man posted a photo on Facebook of President Obama hanging from a noose this week and declared, “lets get to work and hang these traitors.”
