The common refrain from conservatives is that anti-Donald Trump protesters are intolerant of opposing views and are quick to resort to violence to stifle free speech.
Missing from that narrative are the hecklers who try to perpetuate the stereotype by inciting violence at the rallies. On Monday, when Donald Trump was speaking in downtown Detroit, a handful of Trump supporters taunted and bumped shoulders with protesters, nudging their way into a packed rally. They yelled at Muslims and Latinos, shoving “Build the Wall” signs in their faces. Another heckler was calling for all Jews to be deported, and he pushed his finger into the chests of protesters to make his point.
As most Detroit rallies go, Monday’s was peaceful, passionate and lawful. Protesters didn’t block roads or disobey police commands.
One incident broke out when a man aggressively wedged into the front of the rally and began waving a confederate flag in a city that is predominately black. A few white protesters wrestled the flag from his hands. The man was briefly handcuffed before being let go.
