A massive, exposed sinkhole is posing a serious danger to motorists, bikers and pedestrians on Detroit’s east side.
There are no orange cones or yellow tape to warn people about the hole.
Motor City Muckraker notified the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department (DWSD) of the hole this afternoon. DWSD spokesman Bryan Peckinpaugh said the city will investigate the cause and cordon off the area so no one is injured.
“We will make sure the hole is secured ASAP for the safety of residents,” Peckinpaugh said.
Update at 7:30 p.m.:
A city crew cordoned off the hole within hours of the story being published.
Update: 9:30 p.m.
DWSD said the hole was the site of a water main break on April 4.
“As your photos indicate, the dirt has sucken since the backfill was done,” Peckinpaugh said. “We have have a crew securing the area this evening. DWSD will investigate the water main Wednesday morning to ensure it’s okay and restore the area once complete.”
