Updated at 12:20 p.m. Monday.

A Detroit pastor pulled out a handgun and killed a brick-wielding man during a church service Sunday on the city’s west side.

Police said 26-year-old Deante Smith tried to attack the pastor with a brick at the City of God church on Grand River near Lahser at 1:45 p.m. The pastor, whose name was not released Sunday, responded with gunfire.

Police said they are looking into allegations that the pastor was having an affair with Smith’s wife.

Smith was shot four or five times and was pronounced dead at a hospital, police said.
