8. Royal Oak Music Theatre

This music theater tucked into a downtown suburb claims a spot on this list due to the musicians they book. Originally opened as a movie theatre in 1928 by John Kunsky, it began hosting live music and standup comedy around the late ‘70s. Now they even have musicals and off-broadway shows. At 1,700 capacity, it still maintains a general admission and dance floor that allows fans to get close to their favorite artists.

Ticket prices fluctuate here, but are still not as expensive as larger arenas in the area. The first few years after it reopened, it proved its worth by scheduling musicians such as Elvis Costello, Tom Waits, Little Feat, Todd Rundgren and Boston. Since then its continued to host some of the biggest names in music such as Alice Cooper, Muddy Waters, Snoop Dogg, Adele, Lady Gaga, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Lou Reed, Frank Zappa and Metallica. Last year they hosted Kalamazoo’s own Greensky Bluegrass for a New Year’s Eve extravaganza.
