6. St. Andrews Hall

A ballroom that shares the same charm the Magic Stick does by bringing in popular acts from around the country while maintaining the audience’s sense of closeness to the musicians. There’s nothing better than catching a band between the time they’re getting paid 50 bucks a gig to when they’re selling out baseball stadiums. St. Andrews is one of those venues.

This east-side artifact was opened in 1907 and was originally a meeting place for the St. Andrews Society of Detroit. It wasn’t until the ‘80s and ‘90s that the social hall was changed into a music venue and saw artists such as Paul Simon, Iggy Pop, Bob Dylan, Nirvana, R.E.M., Red Hot Chili Peppers and Pearl Jam grace its stage. Throughout these two decades, it was known as one of the best places to see alt-rock around Detroit. Today, it still continues this tradition.
