The Ilitch family’s Olympia Development held a groundbreaking Thursday afternoon for the new $450-million Red Wings arena.

The public is invited to a celebration from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at the site of the arena, which is expected to open for the 2017 season.
