Video: Gay man harassed outside Fire Mountain restaurant in Lansing

A Lansing man wants to know why Fire Mountain restaurant didn’t do more after a heckler shouted gay slurs at him while he and his friends walked to their cars following dinner Tuesday evening.

Isiah David Tweedie
Isiah David Tweedie

Isiah David Tweedie, who is gay, was berated in the parking lot by a customer calling him a “faggot.”

“Fucking faggot,” the customer yelled as he approached the friends. “According to God’s Law, Leviticus, you will be put to death by stoning.”

Tweedie responded that he’d pray for the man.

“Faggots don’t go to heaven,” the man called back.

Tweedie said two employees were outside during the confrontation and did nothing. When a manager eventually came out, Tweedie said the employee was rude and dismissive.

“We came here and spent $50 on a meal, only to leave and be harassed,” Tweedie said.

A manager at the restaurant this morning referred questions to the corporate office, which has not yet returned our calls.

This is disgusting and wrong on soooioo many levels…. But I do believe we are not hearing the entire story…. I have s hard time believing that some random guy would just follow them out of the restaurant bashing them because they are gay…. Something or some sort of argument had to have happened before that that we are not hearing about…. With that being said… The guy was still really wrong and Fire mountain was just as wrong. A manager should always give their name when asked as well. I live right next door to that Fire Mountain and the service has always been horrible!

Regardless of laws and any other rules in this matter, A satanic religious man who claims to be a Christian chased a human being down to degrade him and insult him in public. To the man below, COPS BEAT PEOPLE and they are the law…does it make it right???? It is situations just like this that keep happening to not just gay people, it happens everywhere with everyone for one reason or another. This was a hate act and the saddest thing about it is how the humans in this situation handled it. But since we are talking accountability, WHY would a manger take such a person back into a FAMILY ESTABLISHMENT. You can conspire all you want, but it’s people who stood up for themselves who helped all of those “LAWS” you talk so fluently. Either be apart of the solution or get out of here you freaking troll.

  • Sara

This man is not giving you all the info! The manager did indeed call the cops and kicked that man out. What more should have been done? It is not the restaurant’s responsibility to apologize for other people’s actions OUTSIDE of the restaurant, all they need to worry about is how they’re food and service is. If an employee did this, damn straight they would’ve apologized and done further things but it was a CUSTOMER.

    • We reached out to Fire Mountain about this but did not hear back.

  • Richard Monroe

I don’t see how someone being abused with a slur on private property and recording it and telling his abuser that he will pray for him can be accused of being too insensitive. If someone had used racial slurs, then far less people would accuse him of being too sensitive. If something like this had happened to Christians, people would be getting on their high horse and then we might truly see an example of a persecution complex. Also, if you’re going to argue that the angry man was just expressing his religious view and therefore can’t be told to leave, consider that his arguments crosses over into something non-ideological when he uses the word “f-ggot.” Abusive language is just that. People are trying to turn this into a free speech issue when it’s really masking homophobia.

People should be able to walk out of a restaurant to their car without being verbally attacked. I expect business managers witnessing such attacks to step up and politely ask the attacker to leave the property and inform them that they will call the local police if they don’t. I assume people who yell at strangers must be drunk, high or mentally ill and try to cut them some slack but that doesn’t mean finding the behavior tolerable.

Someone quoting a bible (sloppily) to buttress their opinion tells me that they understand that their position is weak, but these passages are fun to quote in a situation where seemingly ungodly folks bring up an old testament: Matthew 7:5, John 8:7.

  • Billy Blake

I watched the video. Mr Tweedie says himself that he is —— faggot. So if he takes offense to someone calling him a faggot. He should not call himself a faggot. Watch the video you will see what I’m saying

    • Randy Cobb

by law you are responsable for what happens on your property i used to work at that fire mountain still the manager who i know should of had balls and told both to leave and take it off the property

      • Samuel Riddle

so if it was called fire in the hole this complainer would have been all in

    • casey

I seen the video..ur right but in the same sense pay attention to his voice he actually is hurt that a random stranger out of no where said it..i actually to the gentleman. Last night on facebook about it..

  • falseprophet

Its your personal responsibility to defend yourself… Not anyone else. This is a ridiculous story. Why didn’t you report story of billy little calling little Suzy a stupid head in the park today, Gotta find some real news stories to grow this site, these aren’t real news stories. If the man was really harassed why didn’t he call the police… Because this never happened!

    • muckraker_steve

Some people would say that a restaurant should remove a belligerent customer who is calling other customers “faggot.”

      • Richard Monroe

What was the name of the business on the bigot’s shirt?

        • muckraker_steve

You can hear it in the video. He says it at the name. But I can’t quite make it out.

        • ShelbyTwist

It’s Sadet’s Handyman. His own business

      • Jeff Nielsen

It’s called zero tolerance….. I am 60 yrs old and married with 3 kids and 2 grandchildren, but I would NEVER tolerate this behavior toward any one of them… Although I believe the Bible as the inspired word of God and all that is within the covers, I would never be so bold as to pass judgement or call out another human being for behavior I would not engage in myself…. The management should have asked the violator to leave the premises and not to come back until he could conduct himself in a proper manner…. As a ex business owner and a parent/grandparent this was very little to expect… Or was he mirroring the attitude of this restaurant????????? Allowing the employee to react in the manner he did and to alienate another customer is just as bad as acting like the perpetrator….. Hate crimes and behavior IS against the law…. this is the 21st century, by the way.

  • ShelbyTwist

Fire Mountain is being held responsible because a paying customer asked them to address the fact that he was being aggressively verbally assaulted by another customer, and instead they got buddy buddy with the bigot. When the manager was asked for his name he refused to give it. This is unacceptable and makes them as bad as the person who verbally assaulted the man. The person who was attacked, is not seeking any money recompense. He is seeking a kinder, more just society

    • Samuel Riddle

wow then tell him to counsel gaymen on condoms because their behavior actually kills other gay men and words are much smaller on the grand scheme

      • Richard Monroe

Okay, so you just hate homosexuals and nothing wrong happened here.

      • what is this comment, even

      • ShelbyTwist

        A. this doesn’t even make sense.
        B. take your homophobia and ignorance elsewhere

    • They are worse than the bigot because he was their guest on their property and he was a paying customer…….WAS! Fire Mountain screwed that up because now all “Cool” people will boycott the $#!t#*!e! like it is chick-fillet. Hopefully they`ll both go out of business. Peace 😀

    • Sara

They did get something out of it when they shouldn’t have! How the fuck does a customer’s drunken mistake make that the restaurant mistake? All they saw was the manager escorting the man in to get his stuff then he brought him right back out. All you people harassing the restaurant and their staff are pathetic. You don’t know shit about how this all went down. All you know is what one person said.

  • Sounds like Mr. Tweedie is sniffing around for a lawyer to provide him with a big payday at the restaurant’s expense. Since when does any business have a duty to police speech, any speech, as reprehensible as it may be? Especially speech in a parking lot, an area they have absolutely no control over who enters and who leaves.
Life isn’t always fair, learn to deal with it and quit whining that its someone else’s responsibility to protect your feelings.

    • Vanessa Joaquina

      you couldn’t be anymore wrong…

      • falseprophet

        Please explain your silly position.

      • Samuel Riddle

actually he is legally and factually corrcect. you are wrong because you are letting your feelings pretend they are law. your school teachers and mtv messed you up

        • Richard Monroe

          Clarify then.

        • casey

Samuel shut the fuck up..understanding the right to free speech but there aint shit in law about free right of showing ur ass in a discussion now be mature and shut the fuck up..and if u want to stand corrected it is fire mountains situation to deal with because the aprking lot is under their property. nd last i check no matter their situation if a customer gets harassed they are suppose. to do something about it because if they dont theyll start losing customers. Nd losing customers. Means losing jobs and losing jobs means no business. now u have to see it in the basic view..Isaiah was doing nothing when the man called him a faggot..so all in all fire mountain is responsible. For not dealing with the situation. Like they were suppose to be…Homosexuals has every right as we do their human beings for sakes..

    • falseprophet

So true, people need to grow a thicker skin nowadays, my god man your mom isn’t always going to be there to defend you,

      • Samuel Riddle

hey stop telling people to have a thicker skin… thats mean and cold and that offends people with thin skin….hater

        • casey

          No ur the hater

    • Richard Monroe

Parking lots aren’t private property? Restaurants don’t control who comes in and out of their property?

      • Samuel Riddle

you clearly dont know the law and you clearly seem to lack the logic it takes to debate this. i would present a few legal cases to you so you could become more informed but i know it would be a waste of time because you already have your feelings taking over your logic and reason

        • muckraker_steve

Samuel, please stop insulting other commenters. You are more than welcome to share your opinion, but if you are only going to instigate or mock, please do it elsewhere.

        • Richard Monroe

So you’re saying a manager couldn’t have asked him to leave? Please share your logic.

        • Bonnie Rood Rose

          what goes around comes around

  • Rockwell Quixote

This is horrible, but why is Fire Mountain responsible??? We have seen over recent years where employees have intervened in robberies or attacks at their place of employment and have subsequently been fired. Send the video to the Police not Facebook!

    • That was my thought too.

      • Samuel Riddle

but someone with deep pockets has to compensate this emotionally unstable gay male. he was shunned as a teen and he tried out and failed 2 times for american idol. this is his one last chance to grab that gold ring. one last time to be a famous victim…..he could end up on ellen for god sake ans win a prius for making everyone cry over his story of gay bashing that never happened

        • muckraker_steve

Last warning, Samuel. There is no reason to insult people on here.

        • ShelbyTwist

How did this never happen? It’s ON VIDEO. A man calling him a fucking faggot and telling him that he deserves to be stoned to death is definitely gay bashing. You are ridiculous.

  • bebow

The man invoked the word of God while carrying out an aggressive, emotional public assault, swearing, rebuking, and pointing a finger at suspected gay strangers. Did he not smell his own sin? God’s message is all about love as a verb, not about a feeling. Action counts. Do good.
