Audio: Detroit firefighters, medics save man during remarkable rescue

A man who was trapped beneath a garage on Detroit’s east side survived because firefighters and medics refused to give up on him.

Firefighters from Engine 50 and Squad 3 were called to the 2000 block of Marlborough near Vernor for a man pinned beneath a heavy garage that had collapsed Sunday morning. Soon after arriving, firefighters pulled the unconscious man to safety and administered CPR.

“The victim was literally lifeless at moment of removal,” Deputy Fire Commissioner John Berlin said.

Firefighters continued CPR until medics arrived about five minutes later.

“Medics started compressions immediately; no shocks were given by the medics,” Berlin said. “Seconds after turnover to the hospital Resuscitation Team, a pulse was obtained. The victim was then immediately moved to surgery.”

In all, the victim received about 30 minutes of CPR.
