Bicyclist shot in back while riding along Woodward near Palmer Park in Detroit

A Detroit man was critically injured early this morning after a gunman shot him in the back while he was riding his bike on a hardscrabble section of Woodward near Palmer Park.

Police said the bicyclist was strolling near the intersection of Woodward and Hollywood at 2:30 a.m. when a stranger in his 20s confronted the man and shot him in the back with a 9mm handgun.

The gunman fled while the bicyclist managed to call 911.

The suspect is described as a light-complected black man in his 20s, 5-foot-9, 140 pounds, with an unshaven face and medium-length hair.

It’s unclear why the bicyclist was in the area, which is notorious for prostitution, drugs and violence. The┬ásection of Woodward near Hollywood is bordered to the west by the Palmer Park Golf Course and four of the most desolate blocks in Detroit to the east.
