A Detroit man was critically injured early this morning after a gunman shot him in the back while he was riding his bike on a hardscrabble section of Woodward near Palmer Park.

Police said the bicyclist was strolling near the intersection of Woodward and Hollywood at 2:30 a.m. when a stranger in his 20s confronted the man and shot him in the back with a 9mm handgun.

The gunman fled while the bicyclist managed to call 911.

The suspect is described as a light-complected black man in his 20s, 5-foot-9, 140 pounds, with an unshaven face and medium-length hair.

It’s unclear why the bicyclist was in the area, which is notorious for prostitution, drugs and violence. The section of Woodward near Hollywood is bordered to the west by the Palmer Park Golf Course and four of the most desolate blocks in Detroit to the east.
