State launches investigation into 17 animal shelters in Michigan for alleged violations

A state investigation is targeting 17 animal shelters for violations ranging from abuse and neglect to improper record keeping and sanitation.

The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development confirmed today that the shelters are in 12 counties throughout the state, including two in Wayne County and one in Oakland County.

The investigation involves both publicly and privately run shelters.

Officials declined to identity the shelters or the allegations, citing an ongoing investigation.

“Just because there is an investigation taking place doesn’t meant there is always an animal welfare issue,” Ag spokeswoman Jennifer Holton told Motor City Muckraker today.

The other investigations are in Genesee, Allegan, Saginaw, Eaton, Kent, Lapeer, Mackinac, Muskegon, Ottawa and Washtenaw counties.

State Veterinarian Dr. James Averill said shelter investigations are typically spurred by concerns for animal health, hold times and infrastructure issues.
