Jan. 16, 1979: R&B singer Aaliyah is born in Brooklyn

On this day in 1979, Aaliyah Haughton is born in Brooklyn, New York.

Raised in Detroit and educated at Gesu Catholic School and the Detroit Public Schools’ High School for the Fine and Performing Arts, Aaliyah will become a highly successful recording artist and actress, scoring several hits during the 1990s before her tragic death in a plane crash in August 2001.
