Firebombing, injured firefighter set tone for Angels’ Night

Fire Section photoIf the last 12 hours is any indication, Detroit’s understaffed fire department is in for a long, dangerous night.

Shortly before 4 a.m. today, someone chucked a firebomb at a westside house occupied by a baby, two children and two adults. Although they escaped the blaze unharmed, a Detroit firefighter suffered neck injuries from a fall.

Firefighters found the explosive device and other evidence at the house at 12676 Virgil, but the arson team was unavailable because of deep cuts to investigators.

From 7 p.m. to 4 a.m., firefighters responded to more than 20 fires, some of which were false alarms, the Motor City Muckraker tallied.

One was a second-alarm blaze that engulfed a vacant four-story apartment building at Geneva and Rosa Parks.

Tonight is Angels’ Night in Detroit. Originally called Devils’ night, it attracts arsonists who typically target abandoned buildings and houses. In the mid-1980s, it wasn’t unusual to see more than 500 fires in a night.
