Actor Mark Ruffalo, director of the nonprofit Water Defense, said it’s a disgrace that all levels of government aren’t acting swiftly enough to help Flint residents who have been poisoned by contaminated drinking water.

Speaking at a press conference this morning in Flint, Ruffalo called on President Obama to declare a national disaster to unlock funds to replace lead-covered pipes and address the health problems of thousands of residents.

“What is happening here is a national emergency,” an impassioned Ruffalo said. “I am imploring President Obama to declare Flint, Michigan, a national disaster starting today.”

Ruffalo blasted Gov. Rick Snyder’s handling of the crisis.

“What has happened here is a crisis of credibility from the government,” he said.

Experts and residents joined Ruffalo in calling for immediate action, saying that the dangers of the drinking water have long been downplayed.

Ruffalo said residents must stand up and fight.

“Get in the streets. You have to flight for what you believe in,” Ruffalo said. “It’s the only way to create change.”

Ruffalo added: “It’s an atrocity what happened here. It’s a travesty that shouldn’t be happening in America.
