Arsonists now face up to life in prison for fires that cause injuries

The dozens of arsonists who set abandoned houses and buildings on fire every week in Detroit now face up to life in prison if someone is injured in the blaze.

The state bills were signed into law Wednesday and also call for a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison for arsonists whose fires don’t cause injuries.

The legislation provides some hope for a city that has been unable to curb its arson rate. More than 95% of arsonists are never arrested, in large part because the city can’t provide investigators.

The more than 80,000 abandoned buildings in the city are easy targets for arsonists.

In 2009, Mario Willis paid a handyman $20 to burn down a Detroit house for insurance money and was sentenced to a minimum of 41 years in prison in 2009 after the blaze killed firefighter Walter Harris. But his sentenced may be reduced by an appellate court because of his attorney’s arguments that the sentence was too stiff.

“Arson cases are too often treated as nonviolent offenses, with sentencing that is not hard enough for such a serious offense,” Lt. Gov. Brian Calley said. “This legislation restructures the way we deal with these crimes and provides for more appropriate penalties.
