Castle building comes back to life downtown

By Steve Neavling

Like a misplaced castle in downtown Detroit, the Grand Army of Republic building is an unusual, elegant site.

After years of abandonment, the 120-year-old building is set to reopen on Veterans Day 2013 following major renovations, according to the new owners, Detroit-based Mindfield.

What used to serve as a meeting ground for a local chapter of the Grand Army of Republic will become high-tech offices, a restaurant and veterans memorial.

Unlike most abandoned buildings in Detroit, GAR sustained minimal damage from thieves, trespassers and the weather.
